So Long, and Thanks for the Lingerie

Today is my last day as a teacher at Uijeongbu Girls Middle School, and I can't help but ruminate on my Korean experience.

Exactly two years ago I first sat on a plane bound for Korea. I remember anticipating some kind of dramatic culture shock upon arrival, but it never happened. Rather, I found there are aspects of daily life that seem strange at first but quickly become normal, and then there are deeper cultural differences that you don't even notice initially.

At my school for instance, students giving hugs and shouting, "I love you!!" was odd in the beginning, but now I'm used to it. This week I've gotten many farewell love letters from students. But when my coworkers gave me a parting gift of lingerie, I felt as if I had stumbled into a parallel universe. Even after two years I regularly encounter moments of awkward, speechless surprise.

Overall I love living in Korea. I've had so much fun--traveling, learning, meeting people--and I feel more at home each day.

But big changes are ahead for me. After I visit my homeland and travel to France this summer, I will return to Korea as a graduate student. So my days as an ESL teacher cum blogger are over. I've enjoyed recording my mundane experiences here, and I'm sure there are many adventures in my future, but I will not continue updating this blog.

'Kimjongilia' Opening in Korea

Things at JFNK have slowed down a bit recently, and I've been busy planning my big move/trip/life overhaul, so I haven't written about North Korea much lately. But I do have some cool news.

"Kimjongilia," a documentary about North Korean prison camps, is coming to theaters in South Korea on June 23.

The film, which is based on interviews with prison camp survivors and other North Korean defectors, opened in the U.S. last spring. It recently aired on PBS as part of a project sponsored by "The Economist."

I wish I could go see it with friends here in Korea, but I'm leaving Friday! If you also can't make it, you can purchase the film here.

Traditional Korean Challenge

Korea has a rich culture. I've noticed that when talking about food, drink, crafts, and other aspects of Korean heritage, the words "traditional" and "Korean" are added to the front, often unnecessarily and sometimes hilariously. This is probably due to the translations given in cell phone dictionaries. For example:

Korean friend: Do you like (looking at phone) "traditional Korean alcohol?"
Me: What, you mean soju?
Korean friend: Yes!
Me: Sure, it's OK.

I, however, fail to see much tradition in "highly distilled ethanol from sweet potatoes and tapioca ... mixed with water, flavoring, and sweetener" (thanks Wikipedia).

Anyway, I had a day off a few weeks ago and a friend asked if I wanted to take an arts and craft class with her. She said we would be making "traditional Korean table runners." Did they have table runners in ancient times? I assumed I would find out.

Arriving at the class, we were given pieces of moshi, which I think means "traditional Korean cloth." It's similar to Chinese ramie, a stiff, linen-like fabric. Then we were shown how to create decorative patterns with silk thread. I quickly realized this was going to take longer than the two-hour class period to complete.

In fact, I've been working on it ever since and I'm still less than halfway done. It kind of reminds me of making traditional lotus lanterns at the Buddha's birthday festival in Seoul last year--it seemed great at first, but then three hours later I was still gluing paper petals in increasingly crooked rows. I think in this case "traditional" means involving much blood, sweat and tears.

But I'm determined to finish this table runner so I can give it to my mom when I visit home. Wish me luck!

A Few Visa Tips

As you might know, I am planning on attending Yonsei University in Seoul next semester to pursue a master's in international studies. I haven't blogged much lately because I've been busy planning my future.

Many changes lie ahead for me, with one being my visa status. Instead of an E-2 teaching visa, I'll be changing to a D-2 student visa. For anyone else looking to study in Korea, here are a few things I have learned about making the switch.

1. Most teachers know that an E-2 visa must be obtained before entering Korea. Similarly, to change from an E-2 visa to a D-2 visa, you must go to an embassy or consulate outside Korea.

2. But unlike the E-2 visa, you may switch from a tourist visa to a D-2 student visa after you arrive in Korea.

3. If you go to the Seoul Immigration Office to change the status of your visa, go to the residence section instead of the visa section, since technically you already have a visa. It's no fun waiting in line only to find you're in the wrong place!

Beware Juicy Time Bombs

A lot of strange things happen in my office at school. Sometimes people appear at my desk and try to sell me things--socks, credit cards, fake Louis Vuitton bags, etc.

Additionally, a woman with a cooler frequently comes by distributing little pouches of mysterious vitamin juice. I couldn't figure out why at first, but I guess they're free samples to entice you to pay for a service wherein a special herbal juice bag is delivered to you daily, right at your desk.

A teacher across the office is a juice subscriber and, for some reason, gives the juice to me. These--plus the free sample ones and other offerings that appear on my desk--tend to pile up, and my strategy is to chuck them all in my middle desk drawer.

So this drawer contains a party mix of office supplies and sticky old candy, cookies and juice pouches. When the drawer gets too full, I quietly throw them away. Because unlike the drink pouches of my youth, i.e. Capri Sun, these vitamin ones taste terrible, so I don't drink them. And recently I found out that, also unlike Capri Sun, these ones slowly expand over time and, eventually, explode.

I discovered this the other day when returned to my desk to encounter a horrible rotting-herb smell. Ignoring it, I opened the middle drawer to retrieve my hole-punch, only to find it and everything else in there covered with green sludge and a ripped-open juice bag. It was not a good day.

I only hope that by sharing this story I can help others avoid experiencing a similar tragedy.

The Unlucky Streak Has Ended!

For the past two years of my life in Korea, every time I've gone to the beach, it has rained--often monsoon-style downpours. I don't know why but I was cursed.

Well, I guess I finally amassed enough good karma, because my latest trip to Busan last weekend was sunny and rain-free. The curse has been broken!

That's just one of the reasons why it was one of the greatest weekends in Korea that I can remember. How else was it awesome? Let me count the ways:

1. Sunbathing at an uncrowded, parasol-free Haeundae Beach. On weekends during the high season the main beach in Busan is packed with people and completely blanketed with beach umbrellas, such that you can't even see the sand. Luckily, it was not like that last weekend.

2. Al fresco cocktails at Fuzzy Navel. I love drinking and eating outside when it's warm. This bar's location right near the beach makes for good people watching. Plus they serve bloody marys by the pitcher and decent Mexican food.

3. Superb accommodation at Ocean Motel. A few blocks over from the main drag, it's a good deal but still just a few minutes' walk from the bars and restaurants of Haeundae. I booked in advance by faxing the form and transferring money.

Best of all, I got to share this experience with my wonderful boyfriend. And I didn't even get sunburned!

Sunny and Bright

JFNK 4th Anniversary Week Events

This week JFNK is celebrating its fourth anniversary with several events in Seoul. Here's the rundown:

Thursday: Hear classical music and defector testimonies at the Concert for Love and Freedom of North Korea, 4 p.m. at National Assembly Memorial Hall. JFNK is cosponsor. Here's the flier with Korean info.

Friday: If you speak Korean, check out the screening of "Yoduk Story" ("요덕이야기" 다큐 스크리닝), 7 p.m. at the University of Seoul. More info in Korean is here.

Saturday: JFNK volunteers will be raising money to help refugees by selling used clothing and other items 1-5 p.m. at the Seoul Folk Flea Market. I know there's some great stuff for sale. Here's the event page.

And the finale will be the Young North Korean Defectors Forum, 5-7:30 p.m. at the University of Seoul. Come hear university students who escaped from North Korea will talk about their experiences.

Much Exciting News

Several wonderful changes and adventures are coming soon to my life. I've been holding back, waiting to be more sure, but I don't think I could be any more certain, so here goes.

For one, my days as a middle school English teacher in Uijeongbu are coming to a close. In fact, I have only one month left in this place. In mid-June my contract and visa expire, and I will leave Korea.

Don't worry, I will be back! I'm returning in August to attend graduate school at Yonsei University. Yes, I am on the verge of achieving my dream of studying international relations at a top school in Seoul. Though I have no idea where I will live or work--suggestions are welcome!

Finally, between June and August I will be visiting my hometown of Boulder, Colo., as well as touring around France with my awesome brother. We are going to visit Paris, Normandy, Province and the Alps, and see the Tour de France. Ce sera super!

I don't know yet what the future holds for this blog. There are so many things I must decide.

Doctor Fish and Other Clichés

Last weekend my boyfriend and I went and did what every expat in Korea has probably done exactly one time: We had our feet skin eaten off by small fish.

Yes, doctor fish is one of those experiences that all foreigners hear about, try once, and then never do again. And if you're like me you also blog about it.

Basically, we went to Restree cafe in Gangnam, ordered some drinks, and then stuck our feet in a large tank of sucker fish. I'm very ticklish, so it felt like dozens of tiny swimming batteries electrocuting my feet--in a good way. We sat there awhile, drinking coffee and reading magazines, while the fish nibbled away. After 30 minutes, we removed our feet to find them, well, maybe slightly softer.

I'm not saying it wasn't fun, I just don't think it had much of an effect. But you should totally do it. I might even do it again if I run out of new things to try.

It is difficult to find truly original experiences/blog topics. Sometimes I feel like expat bloggers just do and write about the same things over and over. Here are some common examples:

"I ate some weird food."

"Check out this Konglish sign/t-shirt."

"My students are hilarious."

"Wow, I've been here for ____ months."

"Korean people hate me!"

"I'm in a relationship with a Korean person."

"Korean society...weird!"

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hatin'--these are my favorite blogs. Besides, I'm guiltier than most of blog clichés, especially lists.

Music Festivals in Korea

In a throwback to my techno-music-obsessed adolescence, last weekend I went to the World DJ Festival near Seoul. The DJs were great, with my favorite act being house DJ duo Dada Life (pictured).

Thankfully it didn't rain much, and in fact when the sun came out it got pretty hot--hello first sunburn of the year! But the company and the general vibe were great. Overall it was a fantastic time, typical of all musical festivals I've attended in Korea.

I also went to DJ fest last year, and I've been to the Jisan Valley Rock Festival twice. Here is why I love music festivals in Korea:

Proximity to Seoul: DJ Fest and Jisan are both held in Gyeonggi-do, not far from Seoul and where I live.

Camping: DJ Fest lasted for two days and Jisan goes for three, so camping at the festival is an option. It's cheap to rent camping gear, and it's nice to have a place to store your stuff and take a nap. Jisan even has showers.

Relatively small size: Unlike huge festivals elsewhere in the world, these events have under 10,000 attendees, so it's impossible to get lost and you never have to worry about being too far away from the stages.

Not getting ripped off: Also unlike concerts back home, the festival vendors don't try to squeeze you dry by charging $5 for hot dogs and $10 for beers. Just like elsewhere in Korea, food and drink are pretty cheap.

So the Jisan Festival is July 29-31 this year, and you can purchase one- or three-day passes. I won't be in Korea then, so I can't go, but I highly recommend it to anyone who likes concerts. The lineup looks good: Arctic Monkeys, CSS, the Chemical Brothers and more! If you do go, here are my tips:

1. Buy your tickets now on the website for a discount, or you can buy them at the gate for full price.

2. Plan your transportation carefully--several subway/bus transfers are needed to get to the Jisan ski resort, so if you leave too late on Sunday night you might not make it all the way home. This happened to me the first year, and last year we left a bit early.

3. There is a swimming pool there, which is not mentioned on the festival site. It was open during the event last year, and I was so sad I didn't have my swimsuit! So bring yours just in case--it gets hot!

The Best Museum in Seoul

Last weekend I finally got around to visiting the War Memorial of Korea, about which I had heard many shining reviews. I was definitely not disappointed, except with the weather, which was terribly rainy that day.

This huge complex comprises several monuments, a museum, a display of military equipment, and other facilities including a wedding hall. Due to the cold wet weather we didn't spend much time outside, but there are tanks, airplanes, impressive statues, and two colonnades containing plaques with the names of soldiers killed in action.

Inside the museum, the first floor holds an exhibit on Korean ancient military history, featuring a scale model of Adm. Yi's Turtle Ship. The second-floor exhibit depicts the Korean War in chronological order using dioramas, artifacts and really great short videos. This is a great way to learn about the war! On the third floor is an exhibit on modern warfare with many interactive elements like a laser shooting range.

I highly recommend this museum, and the upcoming holidays would be a great time to visit! On Thursday, Children's Day, there will be a a special cultural festival, and every Friday at 2 p.m. there is an honor guard ceremony outside. Furthermore, the museum will be open Monday and Tuesday during the Buddha's Birthday holiday. And best of all, it's always free!

So if you're in Seoul, definitely check it out! The closest subway station is Samgakji, on lines 1 and 6, near Seoul Station.

Lotte World, Again

On Friday I went to the Lotte World amusement park in Seoul, for the second time this year, with school. Here is me and my lovely coteacher!

The most frequently read post on my blog is this one I wrote last year comparing Everland and Lotte World. I also went to Lotte World a couple weeks ago with my friends and boyfriend, so I feel like a Lotte World expert now.

My favorite things about Lotte World:
-The big rides outside (Atlantis, Gyro Swing, etc.)
-The shooting range in the basement
-Headbands
-Parades featuring dancing foreigners (Perhaps I'll seek employment there if this grad school thing doesn't work out.)
-Churros

My least favorite things about Lotte World:
-Most of the other rides
-Waiting in line, unless it involves beer
-The lack of funnel cake

Review: Tasting Room and Guillaume

Yesterday was a good day. It began with my making experimental Frankenstein pancakes for me and my boyfriend. Then while I was cooking, a totally unexpected package from a friend arrived. Inside were snacks, flower seeds, Silly Putty and more--lucky me!

Then my awesome Korean friend took me out to dinner in Cheongdam. First we went to Tasting Room, a well-known and innovative Italian bistro. The place features chic design and interesting menu items, including a "mozzarella sundae" and "sweet stinky flat bread." Apparently that is not a typo! We had really tasty lasagna and garlic pasta.

Then we went to nearby bakery and cafe Guillaume, which is run by a chef who previously lived in Paris and who has transported his knowledge of bread as well as the actual ingredients with him to Seoul. They make authentic French bread, pastry and sweets. We had this fantastic thing that resembled a Napoleon.

The decor was very pink, candlelit, romantic--in short, it would be great for a date. But it's so good it's worth even going by yourself.

Yes, yesterday was pretty great, and now it's almost the weekend! Happy Friday eve!

It's North Korea Freedom Week!

For the past eight years North Korea Freedom Coalition has organized an annual week-long event to raise awareness of North Korean human rights issues--prison camps, prisoners of war, refugees in China, and more.

Justin Bieber, 'Scream' and a Mullet

These are a few of the themes featured on the eggs my friends and I decorated last night for the upcoming Easter weekend.

I've dyed eggs many times before, but since they don't sell egg dye here and the eggs are brown anyway, I decided to use markers and other craft supplies.

The resulting Easter eggs are some of the greatest I've ever seen. No, I won't post pictures of the eggs because I don't want to ruin the surprise for my friends or offend the Internet with my celebrity caricatures. You're just going to have to trust me and make your own awesome eggs. Here's what you need:

Back in March I joined Justice for North Korea and attended their orientation program. That day I learned a lot about North Korea, especially the human rights situation, and met many inspiring people.

Now you can do the same! We are holding another orientation program on May 7 (in English, with the Korean program the following Saturday). Check out the flier for how to sign up:

But you don't have to wait until May to start--there are numerous other ways to get involved now:

1. Come to the the Seoul Folk Flea Market next Saturday. JFNK will be there selling used items alongside Soap for Hope selling their handmade products, both to raise money for North Korean refugees. We need help manning the booths, too!

2. If you are talented in some way--music, art, etc.--you can help out in a big way by performing during the weekly street campaign in Seoul. Now that the weather is nice, there is no pleasenter way to spend Saturday afternoon than outside in Insadong! My good friends Ty and Faith played guitar last week and had a great time. Please contact me if you're interested!

3. Join the North Korea book club that meets every Sunday in Hongdae. Right now they're reading "Nothing to Envy" by Barbara Demick.

4. Attend Soap for Hope's documentary screening and Q&A with North Korean defectors May 6.

Korean Study Help

Lately I've been recording all the Korean vocabulary words I know or wish to learn on digital flashcards at Flashcard Machine. They are more convenient than paper cards, and you can even upload them to your iPhone or iPod touch (which I don't have, but if I did, I would totally do it up).

You can also share your flashcards with the Internet universe, so here are some of mine for you to study and enjoy! These are mostly nouns, as I am still organizing my adjective and verb ones.

Happy Friday

Expat life has it's unique set of frustrations, such as how friends are constantly on the move. This year several of my closest friends have already left Korea or are leaving presently, and it hurts each time.

But even as I pout over the most recent farewell this week, I can't ignore how great things are overall. I wouldn't hate saying goodbye to my friends if they weren't all so fun, smart and caring. Plus I have amazing and supportive family and friends in the states, and on top of that, a fantastic boyfriend.

In addition my job is fine, I love my volunteer work, and my future plans are taking shape: I got accepted to master's programs at American and George Washington universities and feel confident I'll get into the others I applied for.

Last but not least, it's spring in Korea and that means cherry blossoms! I took this picture last year in Jinhae, but I saw a few trees in bloom last weekend in Seoul and hope to see more this Saturday at the festival on Yeouido. I wish everyone a wonderful weekend!

Thinking About Summer Travel?

Well, stop thinking; I've got your answer right here. My good friends just launched their own travel company, True Leaf Travel & Tourism, and they have some exciting package tours set for this summer, including Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, and western Canada.

Steve and Blair are some of the coolest people I've met during my time in Korea, and I can think of no better pair to travel with. They are those world-traveler types who have been everywhere, who have myriad stories, who seem to log on to Facebook from a different country each week--who you just want to be, or at least be in the presence of. Plus they completely dominate at the noraebang.

Even if you can't make one of the package tours, True Leaf will help you plan your own trip! I will definitely be making use of this. You can also check them out on Facebook to see their great travel photos.

Steve and Blair, I am so happy for you, I just ask that you stop in Korea as often as possible while criscrossing the globe.

North Korea Learning Galore

If you live in Seoul and are interested in learning about North Korea, here are a few opportunities:

1. Some folks from JFNK are organizing a book club, which now has a website for posting info and discussions. "Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea" by Barbara Demick is what they're reading now. The next meeting is 12-1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Belief cafe in Hongdae.

2. People for Successful Corean Reunification, or PSCORE, is holding a seminar on North Korean human rights and reunification issues. It's happening Wednesday, April 27, 2-6 p.m. at the National Assembly Library. Please RSVP by email.

3. Of course, don't forget about JFNK's weekly meeting and street campaign this Saturday!

Review: Seven Luck Casino

A couple weeks ago, some friends and I went to the Seven Luck Casino in Seoul near the COEX Convention Center. It was a noteworthy experience, but not really in a good way.

Only foreigners are allowed to enter the casino, and for some reason I believed this meant there wouldn't be many people there, but it was Saturday evening and packed. The place is pretty small, and though most of the slot machines were available, there were no empty seats at the card tables.

I'm not a big gambler, but I wanted to play a few hands, or at least watch my friends do so--but we never got a chance! I suppose I could have squeezed in at the roulette table, but it was surrounded by a rowdy bachelor party.

According to my friends, in the past you could sit in the dining area and have free food and drinks, but that is no longer true. So because we never got seats at a gaming table, we never got any drinks. Actually a few of my friends managed to obtain some refreshment, but I failed. I couldn't even convince someone to sell me a drink!

I guess I shouldn't have had high expectations for a visit to the casino, but I always had a lot of fun at them in Las Vegas. In conclusion, Seoul isn't Vegas. One of my friends did win big on the slot machines, so that part was cool.

Third Time's the Charm

It took me a few tries to get into a good volunteering gig here in Korea. First I started my own group, Seoulite, thinking I would eventually turn it into a service organization. Then that whole thing fell through. Yeah, I'm not the organizer anymore--my crazy ex-boyfriend is.

Then I joined ATEK as communications officer for my local chapter. I was hoping to put my writing and editing skills to use, but it didn't work out.

Now, finally, I have found a volunteer opportunity I can really get into. Recently I got involved with Justice for North Korea, a group that spreads awareness of the human rights crisis happening up there and collects donations to help North Korean refugees.

The group is filled with smart, passionate, amazing people who are fun to spend time with, and their activities are diverse so there's something for everyone. If you, too, would like to give some of your free time to a good cause, here's how you can help JFNK:

-Like JFNK on Facebook!
-Attend the weekly meeting and/or street campaign in Insadong. You can help plan events at the meeting or hand out educational fliers to passers-by outside.
-Educate yourself by reading the articles and books listed on the website. In fact JFNK now has a book club, and the first work is "Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea" by Barbara Demick--my favorite North Korea book so far. They meet in Hongdae every Sunday 12-1:30 p.m.

Office Supply Freak Out

After almost two years, most aspects of the Korean lifestyle seem so normal to me that I can barely remember what my life was like before I came here. But there are a few things I can't get used to, like no 7-Layer Burritos at Taco Bell and weird office supplies.

The discrepancies between Korean and American office supplies is one of those things you don't notice right away, but when it does hit you, it's disturbing. For example, I'm sure most expat teachers were shocked the first time they observed their young students cutting paper with knives instead of scissors. Scissors are rare at my school, and most people use those box-cutter things skillfully, but when I try it looks like a tiger attacked my papers.

However, maybe the strangest office-supply disparity I have noticed is the lack of adhesive on envelopes--you must glue or tape them shut yourself. Recently I was mailing several very important documents overseas, and I kind of freaked out about the envelopes.

I'm not being a brat: My thinking was, usually when you seal an envelope, you put your trust in the envelope manufacturers and their tried and tested adhesive system. But in this case, I had to trust my own gluing abilities, so I was overcome with anxiety. The outcome was that I used a whole lot of glue and packing tape on each envelope--they could probably have survived being launched into space.

So the next time someone sends me a care package, make sure to include some lick-and-stick envelopes. Thanks!

Gross Things I Love

Overall I liked Korean food from the moment I arrived here, but there were a few things I didn't have a taste for at first. But lately I love, even crave, many of the weird foods I used to dislike.

Spam: I used to make fun of Spam back home, but now, like most people I suspect, I have grown to enjoy it in Korean food--especially since Uijeongbu's official dish is budae jjigae, a.k.a. Spam stew.

Sesame Leaves: Not actually the leaves from the sesame tree, they are in fact from some other kind of tree and have a slightly nauseating licorice-mint flavor. I used to hate the taste, especially when raw. But now I think they taste great fresh and stirred into tteok bookki or wrapped around chunks of meat.

Raw Crab: Uncooked, the inside of a crab is essentially goo. Sometimes here crab is served raw and marinated still in the shell, and people just suck out the insides. At first I thought this was messy and gross, but now it's one of my favorite things--and I feel like a sea otter while doing it!

Cheese Sausage Things (pictured): I used to think these were really disgusting. They are some combination of meat a cheese and unknown material wrapped in plastic and stored at room temperature near the register at convenience stores. Well, I recently fell in love with them. The flavor reminds me vaguely of a tuna melt.

The class is on Saturday, March 26, at 3:15 p.m. Located on the first floor of the Joongang Daily building downtown, the center is easily reached from City Hall Station, exit 9. I would totally attend this program but it is happening at the same time as my new volunteering gig--which I will write about more soon.

Take the Sijo Challenge

Nope, not soju. Sijo, as in the traditional Korean art form.

So an expat friend started this art 'zine called Obstructure. Creative types are asked to submit works of visual, audio or written art around a certain theme, which is sijo for the first issue.

You are also given an obstacle to incorporate into your creation. While based in Korea, the project is opened to anyone--so I hope my artistic friends everywhere will participate! For a better explanation and how to submit, read this.

I for one have been writing sijo poems ever since my friend told me about them. They are short and formulaic, sort of like haiku. I usually write them during long subway rides. Hopefully I will come up with something good to submit to this 'zine.

Let's Learn About North Korea

Recently I have become increasingly interested in the struggles of the North Korean people. For one I've been reading relevant books, such as the "Nothing to Envy" by Barbara Demick, and for another I joined a group called Justice for North Korea.

This organization is starting a new street awareness campaign in Insadong that promises to be interesting and informative. So if you happen to be in that part of Seoul this Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m., please stop by! I'll write more about this later.

I also heard about a cool art exhibit in Samcheongdong of depictions of life in North Korean political prison camps. This same collection was recently on display at a gallery in Insadong, where it drew huge crowds. It ends March 14, so I may try to go see it Sunday. The Low Down on Teaching in Korea

I get a lot of emails from people interested in moving to Korea to teach English, and I am generally not very helpful. I often can't answer specific questions about finding a job because the process was so annoying that I intentionally forgot about it. As for general advice on whether to come, life here seems so normal to me now that I can't imagine doing anything else.

Recently I've been taking the first steps toward possibly applying for another teaching job, and realizing that a lot has changed since my arrival, so I actually have no clue what to do. I'm having flashbacks waking up in the middle of the night to email my first recruiter panicky, insensible questions.

Luckily, there is an awesome American couple who have compiled everything you need to know before and after moving to Korea to teach in an easy-to-understand ebook: the Teach Korea Guide. Before arriving here I recall printing out random pages from online forums and reading two books on Korean culture published in the '90s; this guide is clearly a better option.

It covers everything, including all the great reasons to teach in Korea, a list of recruiters and the exact steps needed to get your visa in time. There are even flashcards with beginner Korean phrases. So if you or a friend are considering coming to Korea to teach, definitely check out this resource!

The Whole Song and Dance

Even though I hope to go to graduate school next year, I want to be ready to apply for another teaching job just in case. Or perhaps I will try to teach part time during school.

The E-2 visa regulations changed recently, and Kiss My Kimchi posted a simplified explanation of new requirements. So I don't have to to list them again here, except KMK forgot to mention that you also need wormwood, valerian roots and the juice of a sopophorous bean--oh wait, that's a potion recipe from "Harry Potter!"

Anyway, one thing you do need is a federal criminal record check, which can take months to receive. Thus yesterday I went to the Uijeongbu Police Station to get my fingerprints taken, so I can then submit them with my request to the FBI.

The first thing one officer, possibly a detective, said to me was, "Why you teachers always coming here now wanting fingerprints? This is not our job." I politely replied that it was because of a requirement issued by his government.

Then we had some trouble because I seemingly didn't have fingerprints. Really my skin is just dry due to the winter weather and the prints weren't showing up well. My hands were also sweating slightly, probably because the cops kept yelling at them. But after many attempts we managed to complete the card.

I felt bad for taking so much of their time, and I wish I had brought doughnuts or whatever the Korean equivalent is--one friend suggested tteok. And I hope that all you would-be E-2 visa holders have a slightly easier time of it. Good luck!

Hot Springs in Korea

Yesterday was a public holiday in Korea (something about resisting Japanese occupation), so there was no school. I decided to visit a friend who lives in Uljin, a rural seaside county in Gyeongsang-do.

The area is famous for its natural hot springs and the popular Deokgu Spaworld resort. There is a fancy hotel, men's and women's bathhouses, private baths, and outdoor swimming pools. My friend wrote an excellent description of the place last year.

There is still a lot of snow on the ground in that part of the country, so it was nice to relax in the hot mineral water. In fact it was a bit too cold and drizzly outside for the outdoor pools to seem attractive. Maybe next time.

I've been to many hot springs in the Western U.S. with my family, so it was exciting to visit my first one in Korea. It was also nice to see a new part of the countryside and gaze at the East Sea. I would definitely recommend making the trip--there is even a direct bus from Dong-Seoul Terminal.

New Desk

The new semester starts Wednesday, but I'm so not prepared. This is mostly because no one has told me what classes I'll be teaching or given me the lesson materials.

Also, after repeatedly asking my coteacher to meet with me, I was informed that she is no longer my coteacher. I guess I should start nagging my new coteacher instead.

Anyway, one thing that did get accomplished was the relocation of my desk. I think my school is annoyed with me lately and trying to pretend I don't exist, so my desk was moved to the far corner of the office.

Now my desk is jammed in right next to the bookshelf and printer, and this new dividing wall that's being constructed. All the other desks are arranged in groups of five or six, but mine is all alone, like a little Breda island. Plus they put some of those cubicle partition things around it like a barrier, so the island it most resembles is Alcatraz. I feel a lot like Milton from "Office Space."

So I think I'll use my remaining deskwarming time to garishly decorate my new cage--Christmas lights? incense? carnivorous plants? Maybe I'll even get one of those red Swingline staplers.

Get Excited for the New School Year

In Korea, the winter and spring breaks combine to create this incredibly long holiday for students. So long that we public school teachers sometimes forget our main purpose here (keeping dust off this chair?) and, in my case, go a little crazy.

It was nice to get away and go to the Philippines for a week, but on returning I feel more distant from my job as a teacher than ever. I think it's challenging and fun, but I honestly can't remember. Clearly, I need to get pumped up for the new school year, which starts next week.

Since I've got plenty of free time, I searched my brain and the internet for ideas.

Go school supply shopping: Pick up some new folders, colorful pens and pencils for you and the students, and perhaps some new classroom games like Jenga.

Organize your classroom: Probably not a fun activity for most people, but it helps remind me of my place at this school and also where everything is kept.

Watch inspirational teaching movies: Examples include "School of Rock" and the ones on this list. Haha, "Karate Kid?"

Have a meeting with fellow English teachers: OK, I have never actually succeeded in doing this, but I am going to try once more. I would love their feedback on my teaching style, and any ideas they might have for the new semester. I'm hoping it will happen on Friday--fingers crossed!

The Philippines, Korean Style

For spring break, a friend traveled to the Philippines for six days and stayed with a former coworker. She works at an English academy in Subic Bay.

Subic used to be home to a U.S. naval base, but now it attracts Koreans who want to study English for cheap. The school where my friend works offers intensive courses for university students preparing to study abroad in the West, as well as classes for young kids who sometimes live there for one to two years to perfect their English.

We stayed at the school and from there explored Subic and the surrounding area. Though no longer a military base, Subic remains a walled city, separated from the surrounding area, filled with posh resorts, restaurants serving Western and Korean food, and protected jungle. There is also a port with a huge Hanjin shipyard--more Korean influence. Just outside the gate is Olongapo, formerly packed with clubs and entertainment for servicemen, now just a regular city.

We spent most of our time relaxing at resorts, which are practically empty during the low season. But we also ventured to Olongapo, where we toured the market and a scenic hillside cemetery. The area still draws American tourists and, supposedly, many expat retirees, but we spotted only a few.

Overall, a really wonderful, stress-free trip. Highlights included:

-Superb snorkeling
-Cheap massages
-San Miguel beer
-Tasty pork and seafood dishes
-Mangoes galore
-Our taxi driver, Chris, a local history guru
-Zip-line rides across the street from the school
-Monkey and fruit bat sightings
-Horseback riding in the jungle
-Banana splits, flan and halo-halo (even better than patbingsu)

Medical Help in Korea

Most expats in Korea probably know about the foreigner phone helpline, 120, and probably the tourism-specific one, 1330.

You just add the area code of where you live--so 02 for Seoul--and call for local-based answers to questions or directions.

And recently I found out there is also one for medical help: 1339. See I was sick during the lunar new year, so I needed to find a place that was open.

The helpline recommended Seoul National University Hospital, which has an international clinic, and although that part was closed for the holiday, the people in the regular hospital spoke English, too. It was a good experience overall.

My Meditation Retreat Experience

So, I've been on vacation. While I haven't exactly been away, I've been quite busy doing many things besides writing. Don't worry, I'll be back to regular blogging soon!

Anyway, last week I went on a meditation retreat for a few days at a Buddhist temple. I did a templestay last year, and have since wanted to try a meditation retreat, which generally lasts longer. It was not what I expected, but maybe it was just what I needed.

I went to the Lotus Lantern International Meditation Center, which is on Ganghwa Island in Incheon. It's a really beautiful location, out in the woods far from city life.

They offer templestays and retreats, and the meditation program looked interesting and rigorous on the website--lots of bowing and meditation each day. But in reality, the daily schedule was not very structured or strict, primarily because in the winter the meditation hall and most other buildings at the center can't be used because of heating issues. So I mostly ate, slept, attended chanting services at the temple (which was also unheated) and relaxed the rest of the time.

If you want to try a templestay or meditation retreat at this center, I would recommend: 1) Lower your expectations somewhat, and prepare for some down time; 2) Go during the warmer months; and 3) Bring some snacks in case you sleep through breakfast, like I did every single day.

Mostly I just lazed about, which, for me, is definitely a change. Rather than clearing my mind, I went into a sort of thinking overload due to the boredom, and dwelt on some matters I've been avoiding lately. I guess it was a helpful experience.

If you want to try a templestay while not leaving Seoul, check out the International Seon Center near the immigration office. Also, if you're really into meditating and want a more structured and intense retreat, try Musangsa near Daejeon. They run weekly retreats in the summer and winter.

My friend is starting an art 'zine and blog, and I'm excited to be involved. Heavy Smoker's Monologue launches in March, with the first submissions due Feb. 15.

We are looking for creations that combine visual art with some words, with the general suggestion this time around being a picture plus a sijo poem, which is kind of like a Korean haiku. Read more about that here.

Getting My Hobby On

You know how it is--a new year begins and you feel the need to try new things. I have certainly felt this way lately. So here's what I've been doing with my time, in addition to the usual activities of eating and drinking:

Music: I recently bought a ukulele at the Nakwon Instrument Arcade near Jongno 3-ga station (exit 5) in Seoul. One floor of the giant market is filled with string instruments: guitars, ukuleles and more.

People keep asking me, "So you can play the ukulele?" No, I can't, yet, but now I'm trying to learn.

Art: I used to draw and paint a lot, but I haven't done it much in recent years. A couple weeks ago I went to the art store at Hongik University and stocked up on oil paint, brushes, canvases and everything else. The store is on the left side of the main entrance. I plan to start with some still lifes involving soju bottles.

Zen: Actually, in Korean it's called seon (선). While I've practiced yoga for years I haven't had much experience with meditating, but I want to get into it.

So on Sunday I visited the International Seon Center in Seoul for their English meditation session and dharma talk. The place is brand new and also offers templestay and other programs for foreigners, plus all the tea you can drink.

Free Korean Classes in Seoul

This month I started a free Korean class at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center in Seoul. It meets once a week and so far I like it. It's fun to study Korean among a multicultural group of people--the students there are from around the world.

The level I'm in is mostly review for me so far, but I know it will get more challenging soon. So I entertained myself the first day by ad-libbing a bit with the dialogue we were supposed to be practicing. My partner did not seem amused; the following week, he noticeably sat in a different place. Whatever! He just couldn't handle my awesomeness.

New classes start every month. The classes meet at different times on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, depending on the level. If you're interested, you can sign up by registering at the center and taking the placement test on Jan. 31. The center is located near City Hall. See more info here.

The Seoul Global Center also offers free classes. You must register next Monday or Tuesday.

My Favorite Deskwarming Games

It's winter vacation. Camp hasn't started yet, meaning I just have to come in for eight hours each day and rattle around the cold, empty school with a handful of other teachers, doing nothing.

But I find ways to pass the time. In addition to frequent rounds of jumping jacks to keep my limbs from going numb, I also try to exercise my brain. These are my favorite online mental games:

1. Drench: "The world's simplest Flash game" seems easy at first, and hence lures me in.

2. Spliterature: I like words, so I always assume I'll be good at word games, but I'm not! They drive me crazy and keep me busy.

3. Eyemaze: I go back to the games on this site again and again, and most of them I don't understand at all. But it is fun to try!

2011 Korea Travel Goals

Happy New Year everyone! Since I'm really into goal-setting and lists, I always have a lot of new year's resolutions.

One subcategory on my long list of goals for 2011 is things I still need to see and experience in Korea.

In Seoul: I have yet to visit Seorae Village, the French neighborhood in Seocho. There are also many museums I'd like to see, such as the Gansong Art Museum. And I want to check out more of the city's green spaces, including the Dream Forest, when the weather gets warmer.

Elsewhere in Korea: For one, I plan to travel south to Jeollanam-do to see the tea plantations. I have also never been to Seoraksan National Park. Plus I'd like to go to the beach in Busan again--and hopefully it won't rain this time!

Festivals: There are so many festivals in Korea! Last year I went to an ice festival, a cherry blossom festival and the mud festival. This year I'd like to attend the Jindo Sea-Parting Festival and/or the Cheongdo Bullfighting Festival in March, as well as the Andong International Mask Festival in the fall.

Other Experiences: I already did a templestay, but this year I want to do a meditation retreat at this center in Incheon. I also might try wwoofing for the first time to get a taste of rural life in Korea.

So my only question is, who wants to come with me?

Holiday Popcorn Balls

This time of year I miss cooking, especially baking, but I compensate by making sugary treats on the stove.

Back in the day my family used to attend a holiday party that always featured popcorn balls, and I wanted to reincarnate that seasonal memory here in Korea. I meant to make them last week before Christmas but never got around to it. So instead they are New Year's Eve popcorn balls!

In place of air-popped popcorn I used the pressure-popped type commonly sold here. I fashioned a double boiler using two pots, and used it to melt a hunk of butter and two bags of rainbow-colored marshmallows from Home Plus. Then I poured the resulting sea green goo over the popcorn, mixed thoroughly, and formed it into balls.

Today I brought these things to school, each in a little plastic gift bag, to give to my coworkers. I hope they like them!

My Top 10 of 2010

Top 10 lists may be the biggest blog cliché ever. But that won't stop me!

Another year has sped by. I discovered a lot, but I also have many new questions. Learn, unlearn, relearn. So here are my top 10 pivotal events of 2010:

10. Blond hair: After trying every other hair color over the years, I finally went blond in July. The first attempt was a disaster, and I was too traumatized to blog about it. But ever since I've been having more fun.

9. Seoulite: I started, or rather took over and expanded, this social group, and spent much of the past year organizing events and trips. I met some great friends, and hopefully helped others do the same. But sadly I had to end it to remove drama and frustration from my life.

8. My 15 minutes: My Korean TV debut was in January, when I first taped a show for an EBS middle school English program. Over the next few months I made about 20 episodes. Since then I appeared on TBS and Arirang as well. It's good fun!

7. So long shellfish: Last summer I began to suspect I'm allergic to shellfish, but I didn't really accept it until recently. I'm pretty bummed about it, since I have always prided myself in being willing and able to eat anything. But life goes on.

6. Touring Korea: This year I saw a lot of Korea--Gyeongju, Gangwon-do, Jeju and more. I love taking the train or bus to a different part of the country for a weekend. And I've still got plenty of places to visit in 2011!

5. Awesome arrival: Two of my good friends from from back home came to Korea in August. Of course I had many great friends here already, but I've been having a blast hanging out with my Colorado chums on the weekends.

4. Speaking Korean: Through classes, language exchange and independent study, I have managed to make some progress learning Korean. Lately I've been getting over my shyness with speaking. A recent triumph was ordering pizza by phone late at night, and then helping the lost and angry deliveryman find the building.

3. Going home: When my first teaching contract ended in June I visited home for 11 days. The fun, busy trip included my good friends' wedding. It was great to see all my friends and family, but of course I missed Korea.

2. Loved ones visit: Even more exciting was when my family came here to see me. First my brother came with some friends in August, then my folks visited during Chuseok. Between the two I saw nearly every museum and attraction in Seoul. I hope more people visit me in 2011!

1. New career path: Most important of all was my decision last summer to pursue a graduate degree in international affairs. For months I devoted myself to the application process, which included taking the GRE, soliciting recommendation letters and writing essays. I will find out where I get accepted in the spring, and hopefully start school in the fall. Wish me luck!

If you know me at all, you probably read this and thought, "Hasn't she left out a few life-changing events?" Well, yes, but I just don't feel like writing about them. Plus there were many mental discoveries and revelations that were monumental but too abstract to put into words.

Overall, it was an interesting, challenging, wonderful year, and I look forward to the next one. Happy new year!

Then he ran back to the bike to unpack,
And slung a huge bag of stuff onto his back;

Like a schoolgirl he skipped across the rooftop,
And vanished into the stairwell with a hop;

He returned in a minute, the bag empty now,
And got back on the bike, which was fixed somehow;

Then he shouted to me as the scooter took flight,

ESL: Candy Jar Game

These last few weeks of the semester are rough. Students already took the final exams, so there is nothing left to study. Furthermore, it's cold and vacation is days away.

I'm not allowed to just show movies in class, so I've been doing some simple and laid-back Christmas activities. These include singing Christmas carols (their favorite is "Last Christmas" by Wham) and making Christmas cards. But I also thought a contest would be fun--something really easy.

In middle school I remember we played the game where you must guess the number of M&Ms in a jar. I think we played in math class as some sort of probability exercise. I figured it would work in English class as a way to practice big numbers.

So I ate spaghetti for several days to obtain the jar, and then filled it with peanut M&M knock-offs. The students write their name and guess on a piece of paper, and the closes in each class to the answer (240) will win, well, not the jar since I only have one. But rather a Kit Kat. I'll give out the prizes on the last day of school. Only a week left!

Goodbye Forever

A few months ago I began occasionally having bad stomach pain after meals. It was a unique kind of pain that felt like Robin Hood was shooting arrow after arrow into my torso. After a few weeks I began to suspect it was related to eating shellfish.

I had a whirlwind relationship with shellfish. I'm from a land-locked state and didn't have it a lot growing up, so it took me awhile to develop a taste for mollusks. But when I fell for it I fell hard. When I arrived here in Korea, shellfish became one of my favorite foods. I ate it every week: mussels in stew, grilled clams by the beach, raw oysters from the fish market. I was in love.

Then the stomach pains started, though for awhile I denied they were caused by shellfish. Eventually I decided to stop eating it and see if the pains went away, and to my disappointment they did. I concluded I must be allergic. I missed shellfish, a lot at first, but I found a way to live without. There are other fish out there.

But just the other day I decided to test my luck and let bivalves back into my life. It was an accident really. I had a tiny taste of oyster soup--and just the broth! Then I spent the rest of the night on my back in agony.

I guess I'm the kind of person who has to learn the same lesson a few times before it sticks. I now know for certain that shellfish is no good. No more for me. We're through. 2011 will be the start of a new life without shellfish.

Watch My Arirang TV Show!

Way back in September I taped an episode of the Arirang TV program "Today's Blog." I don't have cable so I never saw it air, but this week they finally put it online. Check it out--it's best viewed using Internet Explorer.

Arirang contacted me and asked if I wanted to appear on the show discussing "quick culture." At first I didn't know what they meant, but then I thought maybe they were referring to the fast economic growth of Korea, the continued rapid building and construction around the country and/or the tendency of Koreans to be early adopters of new technology.

Well, they were talking about that general theme, but the examples they chose to highlight on the show were a little more mundane. I spent about eight hours with the producer, scriptwriter and cameraman taping the show, running all over Gangnam. It was really fun and interesting. The weirdest part was when they were filming me eat, and I'm relieved they didn't use much of that footage. I hope you enjoy it!

Twelve Days of Christmas in Korea

I went to another holiday shindig last weekend. So far this yuletide is turning out to be even more filled with seasonal cheer than expected--partying with friends, singing carols, and gormandizing on wine, cheese and chocolate.

And kimchi. This pile of kimchi was sitting next to me at a little lunch spot last week. It was freshly made and the smell was making me salivate.

Anyway, yesterday as I kept my chair warm at school, I felt inspired to do something totally unoriginal and write a 12 days of Christmas carol based on my everyday experiences in Korea, such as kimchi love. I tried to stick to the formatting of the original song. I hope you like it!

This New Logo

You may have noticed I added this new logo to my page. Buzz Korea is a site run by the Korea Tourism Organization aimed at spreading info on Korean culture and travel worldwide by aggregating social media content in Chinese, Japanese and English.

I am happy to have my blog included. Some of my posts have already begun to magically appear on the site. And I just noticed while looking around there that if you sign up and invite a friend, you could win a giveaway on Dec. 23.

In other news, this week I am finishing and submitting applications for some of the graduate programs I'm interested in. I think I'll take a break for the holidays and apply for the other schools next year. Woo!

Holiday Food Fun!

This past weekend my awesome friend held a holiday dinner party at a hotel in Seoul. You know I like planning events, but this was the first time in awhile I helped cook for one. It was a blast!

I decided to "make" stuffing. In reality I brought and prepared the ingredients--onion, celery, French bread, chicken broth and mixed herbs--and then begged my friends to help cook it in the hotel kitchen.

Other folks contributed mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, and a ton of appetizers and desserts. My friend also ordered two turkeys from John Cook. They were quite delicious, and we devoured them like hungry hyenas.

So preparing your own festive feast in Seoul is pretty painless. Good luck with your holiday party plans!

That Time of Year

Even though I finished my holiday shopping awhile ago, December still took me by surprise this year. For one, I completely forgot to pay my bills. And I can't believe that Christmas is just a few weeks away.

But yesterday a box of Christmas presents from home came in the mail. Actually, the woman who works in the office of my building brought it to my door, which is what reminded me that I hadn't paid my bills.

I moved things around in my tiny apartment to make a place for the box to sit and wait to be opened on Christmas, but later when I was chatting with my folks online, they insisted I open it immediately. So I pretty much had Christmas morning last night. It was fun!

However, I'm slightly worried that since I no longer have presents to look forward to, I am at greater risk of feeling blue this Christmas. But I know the best cure for that is to fill the holidays with Christmas cheer and social activities.

At school I will decorate my classroom with tinsel and snowflakes and fill the next few weeks with Christmas lessons. At home I will watch Christmas movies, listen to holiday music and attempt to cook some seasonal treats that don't require an oven. And on weekends I will surround myself with friends, and hopefully convince them to do festive things like visit Lotte World, which I hear is all decked out for the holidays. Fa la la la la!

Additionally, there will be a Seoulite Christmas Party on Dec. 25 in Seoul. The plan is to enjoy Western food and beer, as well as a white elephant gift exchange. It will be a great time! For more details and to RSVP, check out the event page on Facebook.

Street Food--the Best Part of Winter

We got our first real snowfall here in Uijeongbu the other night, and now I'm bracing myself for the long, dark, freezing winter ahead.

But there is a glimmer of greasy goodness in this bleak forecast: street food. Korean street food is always good, but even more so when it's cold.
While some snacks are seasonal, others are available year-round, but I tend to eat them more in the winter because of the need to constantly refuel to keep from freezing to death.

1. Carp bread (뿡어빵): My favorite winter treats are shaped like fish but taste like sweet beans. They are made by pouring batter and red bean filling into a waffle-iron-like mold. There are also several other snacks similar to these but with different shapes and fillings, such as corn, walnut, and egg.

2. Sweet pancakes (호떡): These are like a sopapilla filed with molten brown sugar. I stopped to get one recently while Christmas shopping in Insadong, and as I continued down the street I managed to get the sticky filling all over my clothes and shopping bags. So I recommend only buying one if you can devote all of your attention to eating it.

3. Boiled corn: I have previously elaborated on this snack. It is bland, chewy, waxy, starchy, and just so good.

Honorable mentions: Roasted sweet potatoes, waffles and corn dogs.

Feeling Thankful

Truthfully, I am in a funk lately. Recent events and changes in my life, plus the onset of winter and the holiday season, have caused this sullen mood. And I'm feeling a bit homesick, which doesn't happen to me often in Korea.

But today is Thanksgiving, and despite everything, I can't help but feel profoundly thankful for what I have. I'm thankful for my job, my home in Uijeongbu and all the wonderful friends I have here in Korea. And even though I'm far away, I know I have the love and support of my family and friends back home, and I'm thankful for that also.

As for celebrating this holiday here in Korea, well, it's just not the same without my family and football. But you can get turkey and such here, so I will be enjoying a traditional Thanksgiving-style meal this weekend. Perhaps a mountain of stuffing will banish my sorrows.

ESL: Fun Harry Potter Activity!

Recently I planned a Harry Potter-themed craft activity for my after school class, and I think I may have enjoyed it even more than the students.

I'm excited to see the seventh movie, and I can't believe I have to wait another month for it to come out here in Korea!

Anyway, I found a template and instructions to make your own Marauder's Map and I realized it could easily transform into a lesson on school and building vocabulary.

Basically, I printed the template and then traced it, but I left the middle area empty. I made copies for the students and told them to draw their own imaginary wizard school, labeling the classrooms and other features.Then with a few cuts and folds, each student had her own magical Marauder's Map!

An Itinerant Day Off

Yesterday school was canceled because high school students across the country were taking the college-entrance exam, and my school was a test site.

I had only inchoate plans, so as I often do I jumped on the subway and chose my desitination once on board. I decided to take my own advice and finish shopping for Christmas presents for people back home. That took me to the malls Dongdaemun and then the Harley Davidson store in Hannam-dong.

When I finished shopping, I realized I was not far from a museum I always wanted to visit in Hannam-dong, near Itaewon. The Leeum Samsung Museum of Art is owned by Samsung and houses both traditional and modern Korean art. The regular entrance fee is 10,000 won, but I opted to pay 5,000 to see only the special exhibition since I wasn't sure how much time I had.

The exhibit, called "Memories of the Future," was excellent. My favorite pieces were the photographs and film by Sophie Calle, the soap replicas of antique ceramics and these amazing sculptures made out of photographs (pictured). The exhibit runs through Feb. 13, 2011.

This museum is well worth a visit, and I plan to go back and see the rest of it. May you happen upon it on your next ambling adventure in Seoul!

Review: Mad for Garlic

Last week some girlfriends and I dined at Mad for Garlic, an Italian restaurant with locations throughout Seoul.

I always thought the name was funny, and I had heard it was a nice place, so I was anxious to try it out. The food was pretty standard Italian, and not terribly expensive. It kind of reminded me of a chain like Buca di Beppo, but more garlicky.

I tried to call and make a reservation for our group, and thought I had succeeded, but when my coteacher called back to check they had no record of it. Also, at the restaurant they lost my order and I had to wait loger than anyone to get my food. But I blame all this on the language barrier more than the restaurant.

And the food lived up to its claim of garlic abundance. We had the garlic bread tower appetizer, and we all ordered pasta or pizza entrees. I had the crab and lobster pasta, which was garlicky and delicious. The spicy items on the menu, like the spicy meat dipping pizza, were indeed very spicy, according to my friends. We also ordered wine, which was pretty pricey, but we were in a celebratory mood.

I also really liked the decor. It felt like we were in the wine cellar of some Italian count who is fearful of vampires. The walls were lined with bottles and garlic cloves, with a big garlic wreath in the waiting area.

All and all, if you are in the mood for some decent Italian food, with extra garlic, I recommend you try this restaurant.

ESL: Recycling Lesson

An upcoming lesson in my middle school grade 1 textbook is partly about recycling, so I wanted to add a relevant warmup activity.

I found this worksheet online, simplified it a bit and had my coteacher help me write it in Korean to make it easier to explain, especially to the lower level classes. The point is for the students to guess how long different types of trash take to biodegrade, and perhaps see why recycling is important.

It could work as a worksheet or PowerPoint presentation. Feel free to use it, and let me know how it goes!

Homemade Pepero for Pepero Day!

Tomorrow is Pepero Day!

Pepero is a popular snack comprising a thin cookie stick dipped in chocolate coating. Tomorrow is Peperro Day because "11/11" is the only date you can spell using Pepero sticks. This makes sense I promise.

On Pepero Day friends and lovers exchange Pepero in a tradition similar to that of Valentine's Day. If you're an English teacher in Korea, you'll probably get a bunch from students and coworkers. You may even feel inclined to give some. Or if you're like me, you will go beyond the norm and make it yourself!

Lately I have had a hankering for baking. I have no oven so I can't actually bake, but for Halloween I decorated a cake and yesterday I made Pepero. It's easy: I just bought plain cracker sticks, chocolate chips and sprinkles. I melted the chocolate in a mug in the microwave, dipped the sticks in it and then scattered sprinkles on top.

Tonight I will put the chocolatey sticks in little cellophane gift bags I got at Home Plus. I made enough to give to a few coworkers and my boyfriend. Everyone else will get ordinary Pepero--most likely regifted boxes that I receive from students. Happy Pepero Day to all!

Gangbusters, South Korea

Sometimes when I type my name and spell check wants to change it to "Bread," I think, maybe it would be easier if my name actually was Bread. Similarly, I recently noticed that when I type the name my city of residence, Uijeongbu, spell check wants to change it to "Gangbusters."

Gangbusters is a funny word meaning very successful. Maybe it would be too extreme to actually change the name of Uijeongbu to Gangbusters, but perhaps we could change the motto. The current motto is "Genial Public City, Vitality Economy City," and I propose we replace it with "Gangbusters City!!"

Because Uijeongbu is pretty awesome and merits an awesome motto. Here is why:

Uijeongbu is situated in a valley just outside Seoul, with Dobongsan mountain on one side of the city and Suraksan on the other, providing excellent scenery and hiking.
"M*A*S*H" was set in Uijeongbu, but today this city is much more than a military installment.
That being said, it is the birthplace of army base stew, a delicious potpourri of noodles, kimchi and Spam.

I love my Korean hometown. It is gangbusters!

Lanterns and Lights in Seoul

On Friday I went to the Seoul Lantern Festival downtown. It is taking place at the Cheongyecheon stream through Nov. 14.

The huge lanterns are mostly set up in the middle of the stream, and they come from Korea, China and Japan. This giant lotus lantern was one of my favorites. I also liked the ones representing famous landmarks and the ship that spewed flames.

I highly recommend heading to Cheongyecheon after dark sometime this week. The paper lanterns look especially good alongside the neon lights and glowing office buildings of Jongno. You can get a preview by looking at my photos here.

My Tea Addiction

This time of year, when the temperature outside drops, and the temperature inside my school drops even lower somehow, is when I start to hydrate almost exclusively with tea.

I like black and green tea, but I am wary of drinking cup after cup of caffeinated beverage all day. So instead I mostly drink dungulle, or Solomon's seal, tea.

I decided to do a bit of research to make sure that overdosing on this herb daily isn't harmful. According to SolomonsSeal.net, it is useful for relieving nearly every type of bodily discomfort, from bruises to stomachaches, and is, in fact, a miracle herb. Sounds good to me!

I have tried to branch out in my tea drinking, and I like corn tea, chrysanthemum tea and most other herbal varieties. The sweet ones like citron tea are good in small doses. But dungulle never gets old. What other types should I try?

ESL: Jenga in Class!

This may be the greatest thing since bingo. I can't remember which fellow teacher gave me this idea, but I owe her some chocolate.

I was ambivalent at first about using Jenga--the game of stacked wooden blocks--in my classroom. I imagined blocks flying everywhere and complete anarchy. But I saw the game for sale really cheap at Home Plus, so I decided to try it out.

I simply wrote a letter on each block with permanent marker. You could also write numbers, words, or phrases, or attach stickers.

To play, I set the blocks up on my desk at the front of the classroom. The surface of my desk is quite slanted, adding to the challenge. Then one student from each team comes to the front. A student chooses a block and must make a sentence using a word beginning with that letter. For the inaugural game, we were discussing interests, so the sentence was "I'm interested in _____."

A correct sentence gets a point, and whoever knocks down the tower loses all her team's points. The whole class was engaged, without too much chaos. I highly recommend this game!

Korean Influence on U.S. Music

The rap group Far East Movement recently became the first Asian-American group to top the Billboard music charts. The group consists of two Korean-Americans, and I was lucky to be made aware of them awhile ago by my Korean-American boyfriend. Here's their No. 1 song:

Also, rapper Will.i.am recently released a somewhat strange video containing a smattering of written and spoken Korean. I read that he is also collaborating with Far East Movement and 2NE1. Here's his video:

Review: Dan Hana Do-it-Yourself Cake Shop

Yesterday I brought a friend and went to a shop in Uijeongbu called Dan Hana Self-Making Cake. What that actually means is that you get to decorate your own dessert masterpiece.

I've been scrupulously hoarding the bag of candy corn my parents gave me, hoping to put it to some use besides just gorging myself to the point of sickness. Then I got the idea to create a Halloween cake.

At Dan Hana, you can choose between several sizes of white or chocolate cake. They frost it for you, but then you apply the decorative edging yourself. That part was actually really fun. Finally, you can add various toppings and embellishments--candy letters and shapes, flowers, fruit, etc.

But I had the candy corn so I used that to make a jack-o-lantern face, and then I added a few candy leaves to serve as the stem. There is also candy corn stuck all around the sides. It's not the most elegant cake, but it was really fun to make. And the total price was under 15,000 won!

Dan Hana has locations all over Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and elsewhere in Korea, so you can try it out the next time you need a birthday cake. The one in Uijeongbu is directly across from Durga.

I brought my Halloween cake to school today, but I haven't set it out yet. The condensation from the refrigerator made the candy corn a bit sticky and runny, so it's not as pretty as it was last night, but I'm sure it still tastes good.

Get Thee to the DMZ

I finally visited the DMZ when my folks were in town last month. But I was thinking, this would be a great time of year to go, since you'd also get to see the colorful autumn leaves in the Korean countryside.

We visited the Dorasan Observatory, Imjingak park and the third infiltration tunnel. I booked a half-day trip through Tour DMZ. It cost 60,000 won per person, which included a delicious bulgogi lunch. The tour bus left from Lotte Hotel in downtown Seoul.

You can go to these areas of the DMZ on your own using public transportation, but after going on an unguided expedition to Gangwon-do two days earlier, we felt like having someone drive us around. Tour DMZ seemed like the best deal out of all the tour companies I looked at, especially since it included lunch. Plus, the English-speaking tour guide was jocular and informative.

Dorasan Observatory: Here you can look across to the North and see an empty propaganda village and Gaesong, an industrial city where some South Korean-owned factories are located. Our guide said the factories were shut down after the sinking of the Cheonan.

We had clear, sunny weather, but if there had been rain or haze we wouldn't have been able to see over to North Korea. So be sure to go on a nice day.

Imjingak: We stopped at this large, theme-park-like place only briefly, so we didn't get to see the whole thing. We saw a train that was shot up at the start of the war and a bridge used by soldiers returning at the end of the war. This park also has rides and carnival-type amenities, and it was packed with families.

Third Tunnel: This was the best part. Here we got to see part of an infiltration tunnel dug by the North and, thankfully, discovered by the South before it was completed. You ride a little train down a side tunnel and then you can walk along the main infiltration tunnel. The tunnel is low and narrow, and my tall parents and I hit our heads many times, so it was adventitious that we had helmets. Despite that, it was really cool.

ESL: Halloween Lesson Time

I've planned a whole week's worth of Halloween activities for my after-school class, so I thought I'd share a few.

Reading:

Read a scary story, of course! I typed a simplified version of my childhood favorite, "The Green Ribbon," by Alvin Schwartz. With a story with a surprise ending like this, you can leave off the last paragraph and have the students guess or write their own.

Writing:

Show this video, or a similar one, and have the students watch and make instructions for making a jack-o-lantern. Depending on the level, you can provide fill-in-the-blank sentences or have them write the directions from scratch.

Listening:

I am going to do a modified version of this activity from Lanternfish. After going over the vocabulary words, you give students a picture of an empty haunted house, then read off where the items are in the house, and the students must listen and correctly draw the scene.

Speaking:

I saw worksheets on Lanternfish called "Are You a Witch?" and "Are You a Werewolf?" and decided to just make my own called "What Monster Are You?" Students can quiz each other and reveal the answer. Feel free to use or modify my questions:

We're also going to watch Halloween episodes of 'The Simpsons"--which are available here with Korean subtitles (thanks Meg!)--decorate masks and, of course, eat candy.

Big Sigh of Relief

After studying for months, I finally took the GRE on Saturday. I think I did pretty well, and I'm so glad it's over.

I was even smiling at the end of the test, while everyone else mostly looked tired. Then I walked around downtown Seoul for awhile, smiling at everything and enjoying the lovely fall weather. What a great weekend!

So, yes, you can take the U.S. grad school exam in Korea. It is only offered a couple times a year, though, and it's split into two parts.

The essay portion is given as a computer-based test, and you can take it whenever you want. I took it in August in Seoul. The math and verbal multiple-choice portion is given in the old-fashioned paper format, and there are limited test dates in Korea--the next one is June 11, 2011. You can register to take the test here. Another option is to go to Japan, where it's offered much more frequently.

Anyway, like I said, I'm very happy to be done with this important step in the grad school application process. But I don't want to just forget all that I learned while preparing for the test! So I plan to use more GRE vocabulary words on my blog, while hopefully retaining limpidity.

Picture Day Fail

The other day I decided to wear the Broncos jersey my parents brought me to school. People often dress down at my school--including me about once a week--and I thought it would cause my students to stare at me and, possibly, listen to me in class.

Upon entering the office in the morning, I was informed it was school picture day. Indeed, all the other teachers were wearing dresses and suits. I was wearing baggy jeans, Chuck Taylors and a football jersey. My outfit made it look as though I had purposely intended to ruin picture day.

Of course everyone saw me as we congregated outside, but I did manage to hide in the back of the group for the photo--literally crouching down since I'm so tall.

I realize the same thing happened last year--no one told me about picture day in advance. I never saw the picture we took last year, which was printed in the yearbook I'm guessing, and I hope I never see this one either.

TBS TV Appearance

A couple weeks ago, my friend who works for TBS asked me to appear on a show. TBS is a radio and TV broadcasting network in Seoul.

The TV show I took part in is called "Inside Seoul," and it's on in the morning. This particular segment was set at the Hi Seoul Festival. My role was to ask a man for directions in English to see if he could help me. It was really fun and I hope I can do it again sometime!

I also taped a show recently for the Arirang TV station, so I hope to have that up soon as well. In other news, I am taking the GRE on Saturday! I think I'll be ready.

What to Do With Old Clothes

I have found a few different options when it comes to getting rid of old clothes in Korea.

There are Salvation Army stores in and around Seoul, the locations of which can be found here. There is also a neat organization in Seoul called The Beautiful Store that accepts clothing donations.

But I had just a few items and was looking for something near my house. There are some big blue bins on my street that I always thought were for recycling or something, but it turns out they're for clothes. On the day I took this picture one even had clothes on top--it must have been full. I'm told these are all over, so you shouldn't have trouble finding one. The bin says, "의류 수거함" on the front.

Overall, I'm trying to acquire less stuff so I have less stuff to get rid of, but old habits die hard.

I made this to go along with a chapter in our textbook that mentions one or two idioms, but I think it could be used anytime as a fun aside.

I made it into a Powerpoint game, where the students have to choose from three possible meanings to match the idiom. You could also do a worksheet.

Idiom: I’m all ears. Translation: 난 귀가 많다. 내 전부가 귀다.
Meaning: I’m listening. Translation: 난 귀 기울이고 듣고 있다.

Idiom: He bit the dust. Translation: 그는 먼지를 깨물었다.

Idiom: She has a big mouth. Translation: 그녀는 큰 입을 가졌다.

Finding Costumes in Seoul

Anyone who knows me knows Halloween is my favorite holiday. And I love to have a good costume!

Last year my costume was just OK, and I am determined to make a comeback this Halloween. So I started early.

Yes, I know about Halloween.co.kr, but when I was looking on there for an Oktoberfest outfit, I was shocked by the prices.

Instead I went to Dongdaemun market district. I read online about a toy market there that also has costumes. Indeed, if you go out exit 4 of Dongdaemun station, walk straight for a block and turn right, there are several costume shops along the street. Everything is really cheap!

Then I went to the huge multilevel fabric market, near exit 8 of the subway station, to get the rest of my costume supplies. The shops there sell much more than fabric--ribbon, lace, zippers, feathers, etc.

What is my costume? At first I wanted to be a velociraptor--the animal I think I resemble the most--but I have no clue how to make a dinosaur costume. Instead, I am going to dress as the non-extinct animal I resemble the most. Can you guess?

Gangwon-do Submarine Mission

When my folks were in town we took a day trip to Gangwon-do, a neighboring province.

I have been there before, once with school and once for ice fishing. There is certainly lots to do. But this trip may have been the most interesting.

We went specifically to see a captured North Korean submarine, which is on display at Gangneung Unification Park. The sub ran aground in 1996 during a spy mission. Only one of the crew members escaped back to North Korea. Now the sub is on display on shore near where it washed up.

The seaside park also contains a U.S.-made warship, some airplanes and a small wooden boat used by 11 North Koreans to defect to the South last year. It's all very cool!

To get to the park, take the train or bus from Seoul to Gangneung. Then take bus 111, 112 or 113 or a taxi to the park. The buses only come once an hour, and the cab cost less than 15,000 won, so we went with the latter. I highly recommend visiting this unique place, especially if you're into military stuff.

N Seoul Tower, Day vs. Night

I've been to N Seoul Tower twice in recent months, first with my brother and then with my parents. The former visit was at night, and the latter during the day, so I figured I'd give you a rundown on the merits of night vs. day.

Going up Namsan: We rode the cable car up both times, and both times the lines were pretty long. But even with the line going out the door of the building, the wait wasn't terrible. Winner: tie.

At the top: During the daytime visit, there were many people atop the mountain, but not too many in line for the actual tower--there's other stuff to do up there. But at night, it seemed that everyone up there was waiting to go up the tower. Winner: day.

View: Well, the nighttime visit was pretty cool, but Seoul is not filled with brightly lit sky scrapers like Hong Kong or something. It's more like Paris--low skyline, not many lights, best viewed by daylight. And unless you have a fancy camera, it's hard to take pictures of the view at night. Winner: day.

Overall winner: day! Going to N Seoul Tower at night is still cool, there's just not as much to see.

Work for Google in Korea

I was updating my LinkedIn profile and I saw a notice for "Jobs You May Be Interested in." On clicking it I saw all these positions with Google Korea that were posted last week.

While I'm not a software engineer, I thought others might be interested. I know it's tough to find jobs in the U.S. right now, and that many people (moi!) are going to other countries for work. This is an example of the many opportunities here besides teaching English.

An interesting thing about these Google jobs is that many are entry-level jobs. One even says "Software Engineer - New Grad." So if you just finished school and are looking for a tech industry job, you should look into what Korea has to offer.

Washing Machine Translations

My friend recently posted this on Facebook, and I thought I'd share in case you, like me, have never bothered to translate your washing machine buttons.

I know how to do cold wash and how to use the dryer. I never thought about it much beyond that, but I may try some of these other settings now.

Programmed Settings
포준 - Standard
울 - Wool
란제리 - Lingerie
큰빨래 - Large load
통세척 - Self-cleaning mode
삶음 - Steam
절약삶음 - Economy steam
씨든때 - Old stains
급속 - Fast

Or you can adjust the individual settings to your liking.

Wash (세탁)
예비세탁 - Pre-wash
비세탁 - Wash

Temperature (세탁온도)
Choose 40 degrees, 90 degrees, etc.
냉수 - Cold

Rinse (헹굼)
Choose the number of rinses.

Spin Dry (탈수)
강 - Strong
중 - Medium
약 - Light
탈수안함 - No spin dry
배수정지 - No water

Plus many washing machines are also a dryer, but be careful because it's really hot! It's like a clothes oven.

Heat Dry (건조)
Choose 30 minutes, 60 minutes, etc.
